inside and on the grounds of a large, sprawling mansion and is loosely

6000 world-wide users make it one of the largest vr worlds around.
Although the term 'self-governed' may be debatable, Lambda continues to
be an experiment in the evolution of a virtual community, including such
facets as representative government and conflict resolution.

Medievia
[Website]
[Update listing]
Other Categories: Swords and Sorcery worlds, Good Worlds for New Users
Medievia is one of the oldest games on the net. They have been
running since 1992 and they've been very busy adding features.
Medievia IV has one of the largest virtual worlds I know of,
with over 4,000,000 rooms! One of the really neat features of
Medievia is real Ansi overhead Ultima-style mapping in the wilderness.
You can also trade with horse drawn wagons and pack mules and fly via
dragons. There are many other advanced features of this world,
making it a site worth checking out if you enjoy a hack-and-slash
environment.
When first connecting, you may want to try the following:
- type survey
- go east on aramingo until you hit the wilderness
(and see the ansi map)
- type 'help formation'
- type 'help mounting', flying, dragons etc...try and get a feel
for the capabilities of the system.

MUD2

[Update listing]
Other Categories: Fantasy Role-playing Worlds, Swords and Sorcery worlds
The acronym MUD stands for Multi-User Dungeon. There are thousands
of MUD games on the Internet nowadays, but MUD2 is unique: it is
the direct descendant of the original MUD, as developed
by Roy Trubshaw, Richard Bartle, and others at Essex University
in and around 1978.
MUD2 is a game of exploration and discovery; of friendship and
treachery; of fighting and death. Its unofficial motto:
You haven't lived until you've died in MUD2!
NOTE: for new players, login as "mudguest". This world charges
for playing time.

TinyTim
[Website]
[Update listing]
Other Categories: Funny worlds
TinyTIM is a really big thing, like the Postal
Service or Premarital Sex. And the Clock on the Wall is the
single most complicated Thing on TinyTIM. Really.
Completely. People have been known to have conversations with
it. People ask it questions they wouldn't ask their best
friend or closest lover. It has been known to send people
screaming off the game. It's been parodied and paid homage to
on other MUSHes. TinyTIM was started as a prank
on an MIT computer in 1990, and through the help and insanity
of dozens of people, has grown into one of the largest free-
standing structures on the Internet. TinyTIM is
addictive. It's fun. It's wacky. It's running on a
Sparcstation that's painted like a cow.

YibMOO
[Update listing]
Other Categories: Social worlds
YibMOO takes place inside and on the grounds of another large sprawling
mansion, the vacation house of the fabulously wealthy and famously
eccentric founder of YibCo, Inc. Somewhat unlike a certain other mansion,
from which it draws some of its inspiration, this house is still (and
perpetually) under construction. The owner's instructions to the
contracting company were simply, "Surprise me. And make me laugh." Many
builders have taken the opportunity to add to the mansion, extending it in
dozens of different directions, each with a completely different vision and
architectural style. The secret passageway system is rumored to be one of
the finest in the world.
...
Unbenownst to the world at large, the secret YibCo Research and Development
facility lies beneath this very house, where a legion of inventors and
crackpot scientists cook up their zany prototypes in a labyrinth of tunnels,
laboratories and underground testing hangars -- strange sounds, smells, and
wisps of brightly-colored smoke occasionally drift up to the main part of
the house from these nether regions. The house, of course, is lavishly
equipped with all of the latest YibCo prototypes.

Abandoned Realms
[Website]
[Update listing]
Other Categories: Fantasy Role-playing Worlds
Abandoned Realms is a highly modified diku mud. The objective of the
mud is to focus on gameplay. We want a MUD that people can enjoy
themselves and other aspects of the mud, without compromising
gameplay. We have an extended help file system, a newbie chat for
those unfamiliar with this kind of MUD, and plenty of friendly immortals
willing to answer your questions. There are 10 races and 10 classes
each unique with their advantages and disadvantages. There are also
four cabals, with 2 in the making and future additions. Although we
do encourage player killing, we also discourage senseless slaughter.
We have refined the gameplay so that brains will win over brawn
because nobody likes boring hack and slash. We test our pk ranges
thoroughly for fairness. So if you're the type of person who likes
to see a good planned strategy win over brute force, Abandoned
Realms is for you.

Arctic
[Website]
[Update listing]
Other Categories: Worlds for Fans, Fantasy worlds
Arctic is a multi-player fantasy role-playing game loosely based on TSR's
Dragonlance novels. The base code for the game was gamma DikuMUD but it's
been extensively modified over the course of three years to provide a
unique balance of realism and playability.
If you're new to MUDs, Arctic is a text-based adventure game where you
create a persona and adventure in a fantasy world. You can explore the
world of Krynn -- solving puzzles, combatting fantastic creatures, and
discovering rare treasures -- along with up to 100 other simultaneous
players.
Arctic is geared towards a mature game-playing audience. There is an
emphasis on role-playing, and character interactions are handled in a
realistic manner. This means there is sometimes competition and disputes
between characters, and these disputes will sometimes end in violence.
Player-characters stealing from and killing other player-characters is not
necessarily encouraged, but it is allowed.

Armageddon MUD is a Diku Mud in which players jointly inhabit a harsh desert
and completely textual world. The game requires roleplay; while conflict
abounds, play is not about killing things. Rather, play is about living out
a character's sometimes short and always difficult life in a world where
magick exists and is feared by most of the population, as well as outlawed
in some areas. Sorcerer-kings and their ruthless servants, the Templarate,
govern the two main cities, Allanak and Tuluk. Life is a constant struggle,
and death occurs over a drink of precious water.

Darke is combat-oriented, and very difficult. Because of the
difficulty level, the penalties of death are not very severe.

Darker Realms
[Website]
[Update listing]
Other Categories: Swords and Sorcery worlds
Darker Realms is quite possibly the oldest LP-style mud in the
USA. Started in early 1990, DR has never been down for more than
a weekend and still features most of the original cast of gods
and coders. Although a number of guilds have cropped up, DR is
still based on the traditional LP mudlib. Ergo, it lends a
classic feel to what we believe is a classic game. There are about
1500 active players (cleaned monthly), but rarely more than 25 or
so on at a time, (and most of us are playing various card games
(spades, yahtzee, poker, bridge)). DR recently moved to a much
faster machine, so it probably *isn't* the slowest LP-style world
in existance anymore :)

DragonMUD
[Website]
[Update listing]
Other Categories: Fantasy Role-playing Worlds, Social Role-playing worlds
DragonMud is an early 1800's walled city known as TinyLondon.
Perpetually pre-industrial and heavily sprinkled with magic,
TinyLondon is a city of cobblestones, carriages, gaslamps, stone
bridges and ancient towers. The colorful populace is made up of
pirates, infiltrators, thieves, vampires, wizards, questors,
merchants, poets, gypsies, ambassadors from other realms, Grand
Dames and new immigrants.
DragonMud is the oldest TinyMud style MU* in existence, (predating
Islandia by a few months) and has been continuously online since
Thanksgiving of 1989.
Unlike many other MU*s, "role-playing" and "secondary" characters
are rare on DragonMud. We find it more interesting talking to real
people rather than fabricated personalities. Citizens receive
visible recognition in the form of status and ranks, as well as
additional capabilities based on Quests completed, personal
accomplishments, popularity, knowledge of the realm and the
intricacies of the mud itself.
DragonMud is not a hack-n-slash, rape-kill-n-plunder environment.
A certain level of manners and civility is expected of all citizens.
The creation and maintenance of DragonMud is focused on a commitment
to user's privacy and autonomy. Patience, tolerance, fairness,
understanding, wit, charm, style, curiosity and creativity are values
most prized by the citizens of DragonMud.

FurAnime MUCK is a safe place for Anime Characters to explore their

players being under age. Where it is safe to be a furry, or have a sexually
explicit description in public rooms. It hopes to do this by being 100%
Anime chars transformed into Furs, 100% adult, and providing a safe
environment for as many forms of play as possible. Playspace... Most of the
world of FurAnime is considered a public playspace, with safeword respected,
with public scenes and play, with collars worn with pride. A place you can
take someone out on a leash, and not be ridiculed. 100% Adult... The Muck
asks if you are over eighteen years of age before allowing you into the IC
area. It is not because we have a dislike for youngsters, but it is to
protect them, and the people of the muck. We feel that, at least for here,
people ought not have to worry about moral and legal concerns about who
might be on the other end of the line. 100% Anime... FurAnime MUCK is for
anime characters only. Anime characters transformed into Furries that is.
A rather unique twist, we think, on most anime and furry mucks. The only
exception to this, by popular request, is that we also permit Harry
Potter characters.

Kingdoms
[Website]
[Update listing]
Other Categories: Fantasy Role-playing Worlds, Swords and Sorcery worlds
Kingdoms is one of the oldest LPmuds running today (it has been around
for over 4 years). It is quite large, and is continually expanding,
due to the large number of active coding wizards. Many features which
are now standard on most LPmuds have been developed on Kingdoms, and
there are several unique features developed specifically for Kingdoms.
The royalty system, whereby a player can become King, Queen, Duke,
Duchess, etc. of certain regions in the world, and the guilds, which
are more like professions than character classes. You start out
professionless, and you don't have to choose a guild until level 5
(you can even choose to continue being professionless). Kingdoms is a
fairly newbie-friendly world; playerkilling is only allowed above level
5 and under a strict set of rules, and there is also a special
newbie-helping NPC, who gives you good advice and protects you from
dangers.
Kingdoms is a challenging world also for experienced players, with a
lot of focus on role-playing, quests, and exploring, as well as the
usual hack-and-slash of battle worlds. The areas are well coded,
with emphasis on detailed descriptions and tricky problems to solve.
All in all, a very comprehensive LPmud.

In the year 2000, the Japanese government ran, and failed, a
project similar to the Philadelphia Experiment. As a result, a
massive burst of energy swept through the test site and spread
through the surrounding area like a shockwave, rippling through
space and time and leaving buildings and peoples from other times
and places in it's wake.
The shockwave created by the experiment was the biggest rip in
space and time but it wasn't the only one. Anomalies called portals
appeared at random, spitting out various peoples and objects from
what scientists soon discovered were popular anime, manga, and
movies of the day. To hide their guilt, the Japanese government
called these anomalies 'naturally occurring phenomenon' and covered
up any and all signs of their experiment, concentrating the
people's attention on revitalizing their city instead.
Thus Metropolis was born. A thriving mega-city blending the
old-world town with the new-world tech where your neighbor could be
a maniacal wizard or princess from another world and the stranger
on the street could be part of the undead. Anything can happen in
this city gone haywire and usually, anything does.

This is a mud based on Robert Jordan's Wheel of Tyme series.
It was originally based on the Circle and Diku servers, but has
evolved considerably through code since then. The system for magic
(the one power) is powerful and there are weapon forms and skills for
all. It is a classless system where you learn from teachers, and
roleplay is encouraged above all else. There is a large array of
guilds for the many players from The Children of the Light and
The Aes Sedai to special guilds like The Forsaken or The Ogier.
Between 40-100 players, at different times, usually log on to explore
the ever widening map, from Fal Moran in Sheinar to Emond's Field in
Two River (Andor). This mud has the distinction of having official
permission from Robert Jordan to use the names and places from the
books.

The theme of MOOsaico is one cultural connectivity.
MOOsaico, like the world, is woven together out of the
individual fabrics of a variety of local cultures. Although
real world cultures vary from one to another, they are
forced by circumstance to co-exist in the tiny confines of
the globe, and whatever they collectively form comes to
define the world as we know it. So, too, with the

MOOville is a replica of "small town America" circa early 1950-60's--before
the world became conscious of its own failings. This MOO embodies the sense
of community that was part of this era. The center of the town is Town
Square (#62) which is surrounded by the old Bijou Theatre and the Opera
House; there is a Ballpark, and hopefully many more ideas that are a part
of the era. We hope that it will become more than just America during the
1950's and 1960's.

with without being in a cartoon.
- Macrophile
- The world where Giants are the norm, and normals are
breakfast...
- Abyss

This mud has inspired tremendous loyalty from its players and coders for
its uniquely enjoyable system, which began as Nightmare eons ago but has
developed into a unique game, while keeping fun Nightmare features such as
Ansi color.
We have a number of races, some common and others unique to our mud, each
of which has its own abilities along with the stat differentials. We
currently have six guilds, but plan to add at least two more in the near
future. The game is a challenge, and there are well-enforced rules against
cheating such that you can be proud of your accomplishments.
Roleplaying is strongly encouraged: There is a great deal of unity among
people of the same guild or race. Players can affect the game, such as our
player-owned homes, and a player-owned shop -- and all of this is just a
start.

But it was 500 years past when one man came, and with him, a kindgom.
As a citizen of this kingdom you find yourself, surrounded by a
land holding onto its natural magick and beauty despite the influences
of man. Over generations past.. from interactions with the magick

many displaying minor powers of psionic or elemental magicks. There

of several empires: Bajoran, Borg, Cardassian, Dominion, Ferengi,

TrippyMUSH
[Website]

From the home page:
"TrippyMUSH has no theme. You can play Godzilla, if you
like. You can play Lucille Ball, you can play Squidgy
the Talking Pencil. You can be all that you can be, without
the morning hikes. So what do we do there? Well, you see,
these l'il cute games have their own similarities to Real
Life, just like Real Life does. Things get weird. Politics
sprout, drama ensues, relationships happen, arbitrators pull
their hair out, and small virtual kittens pee in your shoes.
Just like life! Oh, I seem to have gone and lost my point
again. I think I was trying to say that TrippyMUSH is just
like all the other games out there, but we're a good deal
more relaxed. We're gold-filtered apathy in with a general
who-cares attitude, sprinkled with laziness, and frothed
to a fine bizarre head."

Here people from around the world meet 24 hours a day, make friends, and
form their own little communities. The landscape of Ugly is made of
places that vary from the fantastic and enchanting, to the downright surreal
and confusing. Ugly is not one specific game that can be described, rather
it is a collection of the creative output of its players so it is constantly
evolving.
We have a policy of open evolution at UglyMUG, meaning that the place is
what you make it. Players have many ways available to help in our
evolution, this ranges from being an active member of our communities,
performing social roles such as being a Welcomer, to creating unique
objects, rooms and commands as a Builder.

Valhalla
[Website]
[Update listing]
Other Categories: Swords and Sorcery worlds
Valhalla includes some interesting twists on the standard
hack-and-slay world, and I don't just mean vikings. In fact,
there are 11 races in Valhalla (with 4 more under development).
Bribes are accepted for power items. (Not enough money? That's
okay. Buy a lottery ticket.) If you want to serve and protect,
you can go to police school and gain special skills and spells.
All clothing in the world is made for a specific size. Items can
be resized at special shops or with spells and skills.
One of the neat things in Valhalla is the interactive Tag game.
Players are randomly telported around the mud and must find thier
target and 'tag' them. Another is living, talking mobs. (Watch
out, that player your chatting with just might be a mob.)
There are even rooms and objects with 'personalities.'

Worlds listed by IP address may become inaccessible, even though the
world itself still exists. This is because the IP address is directly
related to the machine the world is running on, and worlds occasionally
move to different machines. In that case, their IP address will change,
but their hostname will be updated to the new address within a day at the
most.
This is why we've flagged worlds listed by their IP address - we'd really
like to get a hostname for these, if one exists. If you know the world's
hostname (and better yet, its website), please click Update Listing
